This week our government has taken two steps to reaffirm our commitment to NATO:
- Today we announced that Canada will expand our leadership role by assuming command of a new NATO training and capacity building mission in Iraq for its first year. As a founding member of NATO, Canada has demonstrated strong and active leadership in the organization. Our country has always answered the call to protect international peace and security. We are proud to take a leadership role in Iraq, and work with our Allies and the Government of Iraq, to help this region of the Middle East transition to long-lasting peace and stability.
- As part of Operation REASSURANCE, Canada is leading the NATO battlegroup in Latvia to maintain security and stability in Eastern and Central Europe. This deployment, which includes men and women from the Lake Superior Scottish Regimen, represents Canada’s largest sustained presence in Europe in more than a decade. We are renewing Canada’s contribution to NATO through Operation REASSURANCE for another four years and increasing the number of Canadian troops deployed to Latvia from 455 to 540.
We are proud of the brave women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces for their work within NATO and around the world keeping Canada and our Allies safe.
