Parental Leave

In the lead up to Budget 2018, we heard from middle class families across the country who said that parental leave needed to be more generous and more flexible.

EI maternity and parental benefits are key supports for Canadians welcoming new children into their families. Budget 2018 announced the Parental Sharing Benefit that will provide an additional five weeks of EI parental benefits to parents who share parental leave. This ‘use-it-or-lose-it’ incentive encourages parents to share more equally in the work of raising their children. It is expected to increase the number of parents who share in the care of new children, including same-sex parents.

It will also provide greater flexibility, particularly for mothers, to return to work sooner, if they so choose, knowing their family has the support they need. The parental sharing benefit builds on the changes introduced last year that allow parents to choose to receive EI parental benefits over 12 months or over 18 months at a lower benefit rate when combined with maternity benefits.
